Zone Map
A Zone and Sector Map is one of the Design Methods of Permaculture. This is the Zone Map for Sunflower River.
"We can visualize zones as a series of concentric circles, the innermost circle being the area we visit most frequently and which we manage most intensively. Zones of use are basic to conservation of energy and resources on site. We do not have endless time or energy, and the things we use most, or which need us often, must be close to hand. We plan our kitchens in this way, and we can plan our living sites with equal benefit to suit our natural movements."[1]
The Zone Map for Sunflower River is, as on any site, a compromise between the ideal layout, the physical contour of the site, and in our case existing infrastructure. Zone 0, collectively the Cottage, the Yurts, and the Trailer, is on one extreme end of the site, leaving a single direction for the remaining Zones to propagate outward from.
Zone 1 is the eastern portion of the property, up to the acequia.
After the acequia, Zone 2 covers the Ritual Ground and Pasture.
Zone 3 we also call the Green Belt, and is where we host a variety of less frequently occurring activities.
Zone 4 we also call Field #2, and does not yet have concrete development plans.
Zone 5 continues past this to the westward extend of the property.
